My Method of Treatment: The First Visit

When you come to me for treatment, I want to hear, in your words, why you came—your main problem, why you need relief. Symptoms are important, but they are only part of the story; they tell us very little about underlying causes of disease. I want to know about your total health and history, how your body, mind, and sprit are working.

How do I get beneath the surface, beyond the obvious? The best way to learn what is causing your problems is to gather as much information as I can about you. In our first session, I will ask you about your birth history, what it was like for you growing up, your relationships with friends and family, and explore your own observations and feelings on your physical and emotional patterns.

Following the initial interview, I conduct a thorough physical examination. I test your twelve pulses, corresponding to the twelve meridians, and palpate your body gently with my hands to learn more about the nature of your problem. I make note of tender points throughout your body, and observe other symptoms such as coloring and scent.

I will look at structure. Are you upright or slumped? Is there symmetry between the two sides? Is one shoulder or part of the pelvis elevated? Do your feet point in or out? If you come with a specific problem, such as a nerve impingement or tendonitis, I will test strength and range of motion, and perform gait and movement analysis.

I also employ the Akabane Test. Developed in Japan by a Moxa Sensei, Kobe Akabane, the test involves comparing the function of each meridian on the left and right sides. Readings are made using heat from an incense stick or with a Hibiki-7, a meter which measures electrical resistance in the meridians. If we get a significantly different reading on the left and right sides, and energetic block is likely present.

Acupuncture and/or moxa can be used to rectify the imbalance, after which repeat measurements are taken to establish that the Qi of the two sides are equal. Then, I repeat pulse taking, palpate for tender points and pain levels and check for function.
